Gyms will often have a leaderboard for workout results to encourage social interaction and healthy competition. This type of engagement leads to higher member retention.
The leaderboard in our mobile app had a number of usability problems, so I redesigned it to make it more intuitive and engaging.
Usability issues
I looked at data, interviewed customers, and performed usability tests to define a number of issues with the current leaderboard.
Users thought the fire icon represented a 'streak', when it was actually a 'like'
Users didn't know the icons were tappable
Icon hitspots were too small
No way to differentiate your own like or comment from the like of another user
Solutions
Changed like icon to a thumbs up
Wrapped icons in small buttons
Increased hitspots
Added filled state for your own likes and comments
Other changes
Date
Showing PRs
Increased prominence of result
Gym owners were really happy with the new leaderboard changes, users were able to interact with it more effectively, and usage / engagement increased.
